PAPER NOR PLASTIC
"Paper or plastic?" Neither -- carry your own bags, not just to the grocery store or farmers' market, but any time you are out shopping. Plastic bags have less net environmental impact than paper bags (14 million trees went into the production of paper bags in the United States in 1999), but recycling rates for plastic bags are significantly lower than they are for paper bags. Plastic bags also have other downsides: they frequently turn up as litter, are made from nonrenewable petrochemicals, may take 500 - 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill, and are hazardous to birds and marine life, over 100,000 of whom die each year from suffocating or strangling in plastic debris. The government of Ireland charges consumers per plastic bag in order to curb plastic bag consumption, and San Francisco, Rwanda, Zanzibar, and the towns of Coles Bay, Australia and Modbury, England have banned plastic bags outright. (If you forget to bring your own bag and must use a plastic one, you can recycle grocery bags made with #2 and #4 plastic at the Drop-Off Station in Ann Arbor.)
National coffee chain Espresso Royale, which has seven locations in Ann Arbor, recently introduced a biodegradable EcoCup made entirely from corn. However, the best option when purchasing coffee or tea to-go is still to bring your own reusable mug. According to a Starbucks Green Team memo, "If only 50 customers a day in every store were to use reusable mugs, Starbucks would save 150,000 disposable paper cups daily! This equals 1.7 million pounds of paper, 3.7 million pounds of solid waste, and 150,000 trees a year." Most coffeeshops will give you a discount for bringing your own mug. While you're at it, ditch the plastic water bottle and reuse your water bottle, too -- plastic water bottles are made from nonrenewable petrochemicals and only 12 percent of plastic water bottles were recycled in 2003, prompting San Francisco to recently ban the use of city funds to purchase bottled water. The Earth Policy Institute has estimated that it takes about 1.5 million barrels of oil, enough to fuel 100,000 cars, to make the water bottles Americans use each year.
